Troubleshooting: Excessive belt wear

Why do I keep replacing belts?

There are a few reasons you might be seeing shorter lifespan on your belts than you expect.

  1. Your motor mounting plate is not level with the machine.  There is usually a small wire rope at the back of the spindle motor mounting plate for adjustment.  You use this to get the plate level to the machine.
  2. Ensure your spindle and motor pulley grooves are clean and not filled with gunk.  This will cause vibrations and shorten belt life.
  3. Check your motor mounts and make sure the volcunized rubber is not protruding out from the center of the mounts.  This will drop the motor and often times slightly angle it and start wearing out your belts.  Commonly this will cause the disengaged belt to not slip properly and stick, sometimes leading to a binding in the belt guide.
